Job search hacks you won’t find on ChatGPT
PS: they really work!
Hey reader,
I’ve had a blast writing my previous newsletters, so today I’m excited to share my top job search hacks you won’t find on ChatGPT. Let’s get straight to it!
Hack #1
Of course, you’re including a cover letter (right? 😜), but to really stand out, you need to spark curiosity. Drop hints about your skills and make the recruiter excited to learn more about you.
For example:
“What excites me most about this role is the opportunity to contribute throughout the entire project cycle, from strategy and vision to execution and monitoring. I thrive in ambiguous situations and love working with cross-functional teams. I can’t wait to showcase this in the next stages of the interview process.”
Hack #2
In your cover letter, keep it brief and action-packed. Instead of just talking about your skills, show them! Add a link to a portfolio page where you demonstrate those skills in action.
For example:
“This experience taught me the importance of clear communication across teams and how early feedback can drive huge improvements. I’ve led sprints and team activities that were a hit. Check out an example of this in my portfolio!”
Hack #3
After submitting your application, jump on LinkedIn and see if you have any mutual connections with employees at the company. Reach out with genuine questions about the role, and ask for any tips for the interview process. It never hurts to show a little initiative!
For example:
Hi, Jess. I recently applied for the Product Design at Gummy, and I noticed we have some mutual connections. I’d love to hear more about your experience working there and any tips you might have for someone going through the interview process. I’m really excited about the opportunity and want to make sure I’m as prepared as possible! Thanks so much for your time, and I hope to connect soon!
Hack #4
Get active on the company’s social media channels. Engage with their content so they start recognising your name. This can really help you stand out from the crowd.
Hack #5
When discussing salary expectations, always give a range instead of a fixed number. For example, something like £75,000 to £85,000 instead of £80,000.
Now go start hacking your job search like a pro!
