Ten quick tips for your job search

Hey reader,

Hope you're not tired of job-hunting content because that's all I'm focused on this month! I'm also switching things up here, starting from a new casual newsletter format, like we're just chatting. Sound good?

While I’ve got a bit of time on my side, I’m taking this chance to help others find jobs and work on a little (okay, big) project which is a design course! More on that soon.

For now, here are my top 10 job-hunting tips to keep you going:

  1. No one-size-fits-all: We’re all different. Explore multiple job platforms and drop what isn’t working for you.

  2. Track your applications: Keep things organised with a simple tracker, like this one.

  3. Share your journey: Post about your job hunt, comment on other designers’ content, and see where it takes you.

  4. A/B test your resume: Try out different versions and see which one lands better responses. Here’s mine.

  5. Portfolio time: While waiting for replies, keep refining your portfolio. You can use a handy Figma template like this one.

  6. Skip the gurus: Don’t pay for a design “expert” to tell you what to do. What worked for them might not work for you.

  7. DM folks: Reach out to designers or people in your industry on social media, and ask if their company’s hiring.

  8. Negotiate hybrid: If you’re not up for commuting, apply for hybrid roles and negotiate later.

  9. Take breaks: Feeling burnt out? Take a breather. You’ll come back stronger.

  10. Stay positive: Good things happen when you least expect it. Hang in there.

All the best,

Sara
